Zhu Min: After transforming the traditional steel enterprise into a smart steel mill, the production efficiency has increased by 30%

The closing session of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, Oct. 22, 2019. After the closing session, an interview was held for the Party chairman Channel.

"A traditional steel enterprise has been transformed into a smart steel mill, which centrally controls hundreds of production processes and connects thousands of equipment. Such a connection enables it to intelligently optimize the operating parameters of the equipment to achieve efficient production, instead of relying on human experience to judge in the past. This transformation has increased the overall production efficiency of the enterprise by 30%. Crucially, the enterprise's particulate matter emissions have also decreased by 25%, and the PM2.5 value of the city where the enterprise is located has directly decreased by 15, which not only promotes production, but also protects our blue sky." Zhu Min, a delegate to the 20th National Congress and director of the Institute of Integration of Informatization and Industrialization of the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology, gave an example when introducing the profound changes brought by the integration of Chinese industry and digitalization.

"As a researcher in the field of industry and information technology, I have witnessed the digitalization wave sweeping China in the past decade, making every cell in every industrial chain of our manufacturing powerhouse closely connected and full of vitality," Zhu said. Here, I would like to use two key words to answer how our industry has changed in this kind of integrated development."

The first word is "refactoring." It's not about creating new industries, it's about improving and upgrading old industries, making them better and better, including more efficient and better quality, for example, green. Maybe that's a little abstract, but let me give you an example to make it a little bit more intuitive. A traditional steel enterprise has been transformed into a smart steel mill, which centrally controls hundreds of production processes and connects thousands of equipment. Such a connection enables it to intelligently optimize the operating parameters of the equipment to achieve efficient production, instead of relying on human experience to judge in the past. Such a transformation has increased the company's overall production efficiency by 30 percent and, crucially, reduced its particulate emissions by 25 percent. It has also directly reduced the PM2.5 value of the city where the enterprise is located by 15 percent. Not only the development of production, but also the protection of our blue sky. In fact, this small example shows that the digital transformation can indeed help our traditional industry to promote the transformation of quality, efficiency and power, so as to achieve high-quality development.

The second word is resilience. Digitalization can help our supply chains become stronger. Foreign transport was held up last year because of various factors. We observed that a Chinese company, using its digital supply chain technology, could very accurately and quickly screen out or locate the best choice among tens of thousands of alternative channels and millions of freight combinations. At that time, we saw that the delay period of most goods was more than one month. This company cut the delay time of 80% of its orders by half through this technical solution. This also shows that digital technologies can actually help our enterprises improve their ability to withstand risks and maintain the resilience of our industrial chains.

In fact, we now see that almost all industries in China are undergoing digital transformation. In recent years, the country is also vigorously developing new digital infrastructure and digital industries, which solidify the "base" of the whole digital transformation; My own research institutions are also working on developing and designing China's own transformation structure and technological route, hoping to avoid detours. Enterprises are also exploring to follow up boldly, because enterprises will combine their pain points to propose and experiment with various new technical solutions. Thanks to the joint efforts of all parties, China's digital transformation and development has become a vigorous trend. It also gives us the confidence to stand together with developed countries at the starting line of a new round of industrial transformation.

"The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China made a major new strategic plan, stressing that the focus of economic development should be placed on the real economy, promoting a new type of industrialization, and also put forward the need to accelerate the development of the digital economy and promote the deep integration of the digital economy and the real economy. I think this is the new mission of the new era. As a line of scientific research personnel, we must speed up the pace of the development, the pace of innovation, daring to challenge the forefront of science and technology, and industry also to go to face all sorts of pain points and difficult problems, to promote the deep fusion, for our manufacturing power, network power, digital China construction into new and powerful momentum." "Zhu Min said.
